RUM in Action Research Uptake for societal empowerment and sustainability

A two day Research Uptake Sensitisation and Planning Event was held by the DRUSSA Universities in West Africa, and hosted by University of Ibadan. There were thirty delegates from Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Calabar and University of Ibadan. Professor Oyeronke A. Odunola, Director of the University of Ibadan’s Research Management Office, who coordinated the event, reports on the success stories and challenges that were shared.

Research Uptake at the University of Nairobi takes many forms and is required by the university as well as many funders, including government. In the past Research Uptake has been un-coordinated but for the past four years the university has put in place policies and systems to mainstream and manage Research Uptake. It`s Happening Here Performance Contracts include Research Uptake at the University of Rwanda

In 2013 the University of Rwanda (UR) was established, merging all seven public Universities and shortly after 3 Nursing Schools and 2 Teacher training colleges were added. The aim of the merger was to rationalise resources for increased efficiency and quality. It's research strategy reveals that it is a research intensive university with a vision to conduct excellent research that is locally relevant and internationally recognized. The UR is organized into 6 colleges each formed by a cluster of similar disciplines and is spread over 14 campuses. Despite the upheaval of the merger Research Uptake initiatives, which began in collaboration with the DRUSSA Programme in 2012, the university has continued apace and performance indicators for Research Uptake have been included in institutional and individuals’ contracts. Prof Verdiana Masanja chatted to DRUSSA.net about these indicators.

As the importance of getting research into use becomes a crucial indicator of universities’ relevance and contribution to society and universities respond by strengthening research communication capacity, the capacity of executive directorates to lead on Strategic Communications (SC) to build the university’s brand and capacity to ‘translate’ academic research for use by lay audiences  - variously called Research Uptake Communication (RUC), Research Communication (RC), Knowledge Translation (KT) - can create tensions.
