eAlert | March 2015
Welcome to the first DRUSSA Alert for 2015.  It has been a busy year so far, with no signs of letting up. The DRUSSA team has visited the University of Mauritius, Kenyatta University and Moi University this month and you can read more about these visits on the DRUSSA.net website over the next few weeks.

Last week in London the augmented programme management team spent two days working through the planning for the
final phase of the DRUSSA programme which ends in September 2016. The co-ordinators of the new research to
policy workpackages, Dr George Essegbey (CSIR-STEPRI, Ghana)  and Dr  Ismail Barugahara (UNCST – Uganda) briefed the team on the ambitous programme of work that will be carried out over the next 18 months.

The DRUSSA Communications Network will meet for the first time in Kigali on the 27th and 28th April. In this work the annual Research Uptake Communications (RUC) campaigns are to be augmented by online and face to face workshops.

Coming up in May is the ACU/SARIMA Conference. DRUSSA will be hosting a symposium for the DRUSSA university Vice Chancellors on Sunday 10th May.

In the main conference The DRUSSA programme will be featured in the New Pathways session series.

The programme for the Conference can be found here and we will bring you more information on these events during March.

DRUSSA Digest

The January 2015 edition of the DRUSSA Digest is out. If you did not get a chance to read it when it arrived in your inbox you can have a look at it on the drussa.net website here.

In it you will find the final article in Dr Sara Grobbelaar's four-part series on Research Uptake policy, as well as information on the DRUSSA Strategic Institutional Progress event held in Cape Town in December 2014 and contributions from DRUSSA Universities, outlining their activities related to Research Uptake.

RUC 2014

2014  was the year the term ‘Research Uptake Communications professional’ became a popular conversation topic at DRUSSA Universities.

The strategy and mechanics of RUC2014 had the underlying intention of establishing a core group with Research Uptake Communications skills within each of the DRUSSA Universities. The logic was that while individual researchers need these skills too, a centralized RUC professionals group in a University can work alongside and share this expertise with many researchers and professional colleagues.
Coaching was put in place to provide user-friendly support to learn about how to:

·       plan a RUC Campaign communications and engagement strategy
·       write a website article
·       write an e-newsletter article
·       prepare for a community radio interview
·       prepare a powerpoint presentation, and
·       report on a RUC Campaign

The list of website article topics  that have come out of the RUC2014 Campaign provide a fascinating glimpse into gender-related development research in and from SSA. We have started a blog series profiling these articles that will run over the next few months. The first blog in the series can be found here. Each blog links to the previous blog and the next blog.
